LiDAR to Digital Twin: Improving school operations and safety

Course Objective

This course transforms mobile LiDAR scans of the interior of a school into analysis-ready spatial datasets. Using data captured with handheld LiDAR scanners, students learn how to clean, transform, and derive features from dense point clouds representing real buildings. You will create processing pipelines, GIS analysis, and map visualizations. The resulting digital twin is used to manage operations and support emergency response.

Hirable skills you’ll learn

  • Learn how indoor and architectural LiDAR data is captured with mobile SLAM systems
  • Inspect indoor point clouds to assess spatial extent, density, and data quality
  • Reduce point-cloud density while preserving architectural structure
  • Verify point-cloud transformations using quantitative indicators
  • Remove noise and artifacts common in indoor SLAM scans
  • Normalize elevations and reference point clouds for building-scale analysis
  • Generate raster surface models from indoor LiDAR data
  • Derive vector representations of architectural features from point clouds and rasters
  • Integrate processed indoor LiDAR products into GIS databases

About your instructor

Dr. Cartlidge runs a consulting firm that leverages geospatial technology to offer population forecasting consulting services. He uses many pieces of the enterprise Esri stack to create geodatabases and run spatial models. Dr. Cartlidge has 8+ years experience forecasting student enrollment and leading school redistricting projects for Prince William County Public Schools. He has a PhD from University of Nebraska and holds a GISP. He serves as a GIS subject matter expert for Southern New Hampshire University. Outside of the geospatial world you’ll see Dr. Cartlidge on the golf course, traveling, or hiking with his family and dog.

Focus your learning on the skills GIS jobs are asking for

A common GIS education path has been to pursue a Masters program in GIS. But it’s widely known in the industry that new geography grads are not getting enough exposure to cloud, mobile, and new geospatial programming environments.

So we assembled a world class team to teach you how to be the talent that the geospatial industry WILL HIRE. Compare the experience of our industry instructors and you’ll see why we top the list of best online GIS certiWcate programs.
  • Real-world scenarios

I like the real-world scenarios. My professors used to do GIS before Web GIS was in existence so our curriculum is out of date. The courses I’ve taken on the Bootcamp GIS platform are so much more useful than my school’s lab exercises which only taught me to digitize a line, generate a buffer, and make a map layout.
